James McKay

James McKay

Written in tribute to the tattoo of Snufkin (Moomintroll’s best friend) put on Newcastle poet James McKay’s arm in the closing years of the last century, this show traces key Moomin themes – friends, adventures and parties; queerness and paganism; melancholy and nostalgia; the seasons; the North; travel and surprises – through his poems and travels since.

A seamless blend of natural speech, verse story-telling and performed lyrics, the show features a pulsating prog-rock soundtrack from The Morris Quinlan Experience (as heard on BBC Radio 2).

James McKay has been doing spoken word since before it was even a thing, at first in close association with Newcastle’s Home Cooking night, later with Utter! Spoken Word in London and at the Edinburgh Fringe. There’s plenty of his work online at www.mckaypoetry.com.

This event is free, but donations are welcome.
